We are Daniel and Emma–in Spring 2018 we pulled the trigger on living the dream. After spending five years in the corporate world (Daniel), and five years teaching middle school science (Emma), we decided a realignment of priorities was in order. We quit our jobs, bought and rehabbed a house to rent on AirBnB, and moved into a Ford Econoline van. We spent the next 4 months traveling the Western United States in our “van-a-home.” Our appetites for van life sated, we planned our next move: sail around the world.
Why sailing? We love the idea of sustainable travel that enhances our connection with the natural world. Sailing demands a heightened awareness of resource consumption and waste generation, and it is more important than ever for all of us to be conscious of our footprint. Sailing will make us more self sufficient, and will challenge us mentally and physically. We enjoy putting our heads together to craft solutions to problems. One time when we locked our keys in the van, we came up with the brilliant idea to borrow someone’s child and put him through the window and unlock the door! Fixing, rebuilding, and fixing again is our forte. We relish the opportunities to learn new languages and experience new cultures. As a wise man once said “The world is a book, and those who don’t travel only read one page.” It’s a good thing we like to read. Circumstances may prevent this life from becoming everyone’s reality, but to continue with the ‘world’s a book’ metaphor, hopefully you will find enjoyment in us reading out loud to you! If your ambition is to embark on a sailing adventure of your own, we hope you find our website a useful resource and source of inspiration.
