Selling Indy is bittersweet, we had the adventure of a lifetime aboard but are looking forward to the next chapter. We would love to see her go to someone who loves the feeling of being at the helm of an excellent, elegant, and fun sailing boat while exploring far off places.

Indy has been thoughtfully upgraded and well-maintained, and we will be sad to see her go. Indy is a Crealock 37 made by  Pacific Seacraft and designed by Bill Crealock. Made in 1981 and with one and a half circumnavigations under her belt, and many hours of love and maintenance, she is as strong and reliable as ever.

She is fully kitted out for long distance cruising: reliable engine, large fuel and water capacity, Monitor windvane, watermaker, updated rigging, fast+reliable dinghy, updated electronics, practical sail inventory, solar power, large battery bank, refrigeration, bulletproof ground tackle, TONS of spares, plus some awesome upgrades for living aboard. The (few) problems common to older Pacific Seacrafts have all been addressed: some older models had problems with osmotic blistering on the hull (due to use of polyester resin). In 2015 the hull was stripped down and epoxy barrier coated to prevent osmostic blistering. Many older PSC report rusting out of the bottom of the main diesel tank. Indy had a new custom built SS tank installed in 2015.  Lastly, many of the older PSC’s had problems with the galley sink being below the waterline. We fixed this is 2020 with a custom built stainless sink.

Indy is rigged for safe, fast sailing. All lines are led aft to the cockpit. We recently set up double-line reefing so that the mainsail can be reefed entirely from the safety of the cockpit. The cutter rig with a yankee cut jib is perfect for offshore work–balanced, powerful, and easy to handle. The 130% drifter is absolutely amazing. It keeps us sailing in light air when we’d be otherwise motoring, its strong enough to survive squalls, and its less fussy than a spinnaker.

We’ve made some great upgrades for living aboard. Our solar panels generate enough power to meet all of our electrical needs–including running the watermaker. We expanded the sleeping area of the v-berth and created a large storage area. Indy has tons of storage for a PSC 37–cabinets over both the chart table and galley sink, plus a custom built radio cabinet and a salon shelf. We’ve upgraded the lighting to illuminate the galley and salon areas. Indy is cozy and bright down below. Indy is great for a single hander or a couple who are ready to cast off the lines, and go explore the world!

Galley

Indy’s galley is laid out to be safe, efficient, and able to supply you and your crew with anything you crave (while supplies last). We custom crafted a large single basin stainless steel sink–great for washing all the dishes after a party onboard. Water to the sink is supplied by two foot pumps–one salt, one fresh. Along with a house style pressure water faucet. The Magma  range has three burners–one large, two small, and an oven that can bake cookies to perfection. The fridge is honestly a bottomless pit–but its great! It is a large top loading fridge with with a freezer area that gets cold enough to make ice and keep your freshly caught fish frozen. There are two rare and coveted over sink cabinets that provide some awesome galley storage. A large sliding door pantry which can hold all galley staples, three drawers for galley knicknacks, two cabinets over the fridge, under the sink storage, and one large storage area for pots and pans. Additionally, Indy’s galley has a custom made (thanks Daniel) wooden cutting board that fits on top of the sink–adding more workspace. This galley has kept us safe while in rough seas, everything is within an arms reach. There are nooks that you can tuck yourself into while underway to ensure you don’t go flying when the boat rolls. The view out the galley port light is the best in the house, and one that we will miss daily. Photos taken: November 2022

Navigation Station and Quarter Berth

The nav station is where all the action is at! This is the hub for all electronics onboard. The panel is very direct and easy to understand. The Iridium go! is connected to an external antennae so all that you need to do is boot it up and connect. The book case holds any pilot charts, cookbooks, cruising guides you may need. The quarter berth has been converted to a boat garage/pantry area. The white shelves were custom made to hold veggies and fruits while keeping them safe underway with a genius locking system. The ditch kit is ready to go, and the quarter berth is stocked with spares and extras. The large 45 gallon aft water tank is easily accessible. Photos taken: November 2022

Salon Area

The salon is where we spend the majority of our time. It’s our living room, dining room, sea berth, and a guest berth. The sea berth has a brand new cushion to optimize sleeping comfort while underway. There are two fans to keep you cool in the South Pacific heat as well as a propane Dickinson heater to keep you warm if you decide to sail to colder weather. We added a custom book shelf on the starboard side which keeps all things nice and secure when you are on the hardest of heels. We also added some nice LED lighting to brighten up the dark wood and give a nice ambiance. Under all of the cushions are dry storage lockers which are secured with locks to make sure things don’t go flying while underway. There are two storage lockers under the floor boards which lead into the bilge. There is easy access to the fuel tank area–just lift up the floor board and you can check the fuel level immediately. We have also made a custom cradle for our Sailrite sewing machine (available for separate purchase) which is located under the table midships. The salon table folds down to make a smaller table. We have easily sat 6 people around the table! Great for hosting dinner parties at anchor. Photos taken: November 2022

Head

The head has lots of storage, a shower which is hooked up to a sump pump, and a Jabsco head with a  new head pump unit. It also has a fan to keep things smelling and feeling fresh along with a dorade access vent funneling air in from the outside. It is a pretty basic head but it gets the job done! V-Berth

Most Pacific Seacrafts have a full sized bed with a chair next to it. We tried this setup out for a while, and found that in the tropics we needed a bit more elbow room. We converted the chair into storage space which supports the mattress expansion. The bed is now a king sized bed at the shoulders and tapers down to a queen-full at the feet. There are two fans providing each sleeper with luxury airflow at anytime in the night with no bickering needed! There is ample storage along the hull of the boat, a vanity, seven large drawers, one laundry locker, and a deep hanging locker. There is a large hatch above the bed that brings in ample air. We made a v-berth shade that noticeably cools down the v-berth, funnels air, and keeps rain out while allowing the hatch to be open. There is a large 35 gallon water tank under the bed along with 3 large storage areas. Photos taken: November 2022

Electronics

The electronics onboard check all the boxes. It has long distance satellite communication  (Iridium Go!), entirely updated VHF system, the battery bank is large and only one year old. Most importantly, there is enough solar power (700W) to meet all the electrical demands including running the 12V DC watermaker (also new). Gone are the days of running the engine to top off the batteries! The radar is old school but it can easily find the smallest of boats in the water and incoming squalls. Love that thing. The boat has essentially been fully rewired since 2015. Indys electronics are simple, well thought out, and safe. We have put a lot of work into making most of the wiring chafe resistant, waterproof, and logical. Photos taken: November 2022

Engine

Indy is equipped with a 4JH3E 56 HP Yanmar diesel engine. The engine was installed in 2015 and only has 1,600 hours. We have been very fastidious with the maintenance and the engine has rewarded us with very reliable performance. It is equipped with a oversized alternator. Motoring at 5 knots, the engine consumes about 3/4 of a gallon per hour. With a fuel capacity of 65 gallons, this equates to a range of about 425 miles, which is way more than we have ever needed. The engine is slightly oversized for the boat and has taken us through the hardest flowing currents, tightest marinas, and roughest seas with nothing but confidence. Photos taken: November 2022

Cockpit

Indy is equipped with a steering wheel and a cockpit binnacle with chartplotter, speedometer, compass and depth sounder. The radar display is located inside the boat, but can pivot out to be viewed from the cockpit. In 2019 we replaced the lifelines with stainless steel tubing, making the cockpit a bit bigger and a whole lot safer. The cockpit is ideal for cruising the tropics, we have the rigid bimini with a removable center connector that provides shade in the cockpit and the ability to look at the stars at night. We have a hard dodger with a roll up soft panel in the center to allow a breeze into the cockpit. There is a fold down table that is just big enough for two people to enjoy dinner. When we’re at anchor we love grilling on the back rail and eating outside with the sunset. On the stern we have a purchase system for hoisting the outboard onto the dinghy or onto the boat with ease!

The cockpit is where all the line handling happens. Raising, lowering, reefing and trimming the main or jib can all be done in the comfort of the cockpit. We added double line reefing in 2020 and its been a game changer. We can reef in about 30 seconds without having to go forward. The monitor wind vane does 90% of our steering, and is controlled from the cockpit as well. When we are motoring we use our energy-efficient belt drive ST3000 autopilot There are two tether anchor points to keep you connected to the boat in rough weather, as well as attachment points for jacklines running forward to the bow. There are four lazarettes–one large one on the starboard side, two small ones behind the helm, and one propane locker aft. The two of us can lay down flat in the cockpit comfortably (we are tall people) and feel very safe underway in the small but efficient cockpit.

The forward half of the cockpit sole hinges upward to provide access to the engine room where you can easily access the watermaker filters and motor, back of the engine, steering cables, packing gland, inverter, and refrigeration components.

Deck and Rigging

Topside, Indy has dyneema lifelines, wide side decks, aluminum perforated toe rail, and a 20 gallon diesel fuel tank mounted in front of the mast. Indy is equipped with a new Viking 4 person liferaft (2019) that is mounted in front of the dodger. In 2022 we installed rat lines to climb up the rigging making it easy to spot coral heads. The teak handrails were replaced in 2021. All running rigging has been replaced since 2019. In 2021 we installed all new chainplates and turnbuckles–giving us much security about the integrity of Indys rigging. The existing sheaves were aluminum meant for wire halyards, and we replaced them with custom delrin sheaves. The rest of the standing rigging was replaced with new components in 2015.

We have an oversized 44lb Sarca Excel spade anchor that has never dragged on us and keeps us feeling quite safe at anchor in the biggest of blows. Indy is equipped with 280 feet of 5/16 G4 high test chain and 20 feet of rode, making it possible to anchor safely in deeper anchorages. In 2022 we had a new stainless stemhead fitting fabricated. Indys windlass is made by Maxwell and is controlled by two foot pedals. We recently serviced it and it is in fine working condition! For passages, our dinghy (Achillies 8 foot folding transom with fiberglass bottom–FX290) fits perfectly in between the mast and in inner forestay inflated or deflated.

Sails

Indy is a cutter rigged boat–we have a high cut furling Yankee jib 90%, hank on staysail, battened mainsail with 3 reefs, 130% drifter made of 2.5oz ripstop nylon. The working sails were in like new condition when we got the boat. After 17K miles, they have a bit of wear but still have a lot of life in them still. The drifter we sewed ourselves in 2021 and has a custom on deck bag to make flying the drifter easy. The jib furls up with a Furlex furler, which is very easy to use. The staysail lives on deck in a staysail bag connected to the bottom of the inner forstay, ready to be hoisted when going up wind. We have rigged up an easy and effective preventer system that we connect anytime the wind is aft of the beam. The stackpack (also sewed by us) makes raising and lowering the main easy shorthanded.

Dinghy

The dinghy is an 8 foot Achilles folding transom with a fiberglass bottom. It fits perfectly between the inner forestay and the mast for passage making. It comes with dinghy chaps, a custom anchor bag, and a 3 gallon fuel tank. The outboard is a 8hp Yamaha 4 stroke which is reliable, fast, and fun to drive. It is a great dinghy setup and has taken us on some epic adventures. We can plane with 2 people and free diving gear (or groceries). Dinghy photos: Spring 2021
